About silence removal

Silence removal automatically detects and strips out quiet sections from audio recordings. This is invaluable for podcast editors, voice-over artists, and musicians who need to tighten recordings without manually trimming every gap. The process analyses the amplitude of the waveform and identifies regions that fall below a configurable threshold for a specified minimum duration.

How the threshold works

The silence threshold is expressed in decibels (dB) relative to full scale. A threshold of -35dB means any section where the audio level stays below roughly 1.8% of maximum amplitude is considered silent. Lower thresholds (e.g. -50dB) catch only near-total silence, whilst higher thresholds (e.g. -20dB) will also remove quiet passages like background hum or room tone.

Minimum duration

The minimum silence duration prevents very brief pauses from being removed. Natural speech contains short silences between words and phrases that are essential for comprehension. Setting a minimum of 300-500ms preserves these natural gaps whilst still removing the longer awkward pauses.
