What are favicons?

Favicons are small icons displayed in browser tabs, bookmarks, history lists, and home screens. They provide a visual identity for your website, helping users quickly identify your site among many open tabs. The name comes from "favourite icon", dating back to Internet Explorer 5 which first introduced the feature in 1999.

Which sizes do you need?

Modern browsers and devices require favicons at several sizes. The classic 16x16 and 32x32 pixel sizes cover browser tabs and bookmarks. A 48x48 icon is used by some desktop environments. Apple devices require a 180x180 pixel apple-touch-icon for home screen shortcuts. Android and progressive web apps use 192x192 and 512x512 pixel icons defined in the web app manifest. This tool generates all six standard sizes from a single source image.

Best practices

Start with the largest, highest-quality source image you have - ideally square and at least 512x512 pixels. Simple, bold designs work best at small sizes where fine details are lost. Use a transparent PNG if your icon does not fill the entire square. Test your favicons across different browsers and devices to ensure they remain recognisable at every size.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API for resizing and JSZip for packaging. No images are uploaded to any server. Your files stay on your machine.
